The helicopter lands gently on the high plateau and sends us out to our adventure. Thanks to my high-quality Capranea outfit, I can withstand the cold. I close the visor on my Alpina helmet and once again enjoy the breathtaking view over the vast snowfields right down to the Atlantic. Whilst at the start of April, the ski season has already come to an end in the Alps, it goes on until late June in Iceland. The adrenalin is pumping; now the descent starts. Finest powder snow kicks up while we carve our way through the undisturbed slopes of this imposing Iceland – pure enjoyment covering hundreds of metres in altitude difference.
Strong winds are sweeping through Reykjavík. I should really fly from Zurich over Reykjavík and onto Akureyri but the weather in Iceland is preventing all flights. Before my arrival on Deplar Farm by Eleven Experience – which is situated in a remote location in the mountain region of the Troll Peninsula – the programme included an initial stay in the Deplar Guesthouse near the old town of Reykjavík. After a relaxing aperitif there, I get to enjoy a visit to the famous Harpa concert hall. The four-hour car journey the next day gives me the opportunity to experience a bit more of the island, which covers 103,000 square kilometres. Out of Iceland’s 340,000 inhabitants, 250,000 live in the capital city – as soon as you leave it, the solitude is palpable. The countryside appears wild, steep cliffs defy the North Atlantic and snow-covered mountains bear witness to their volcanic origins. Despite the raw climate, which reaches a maximum of just 17 degrees in the summer, one thing is never in doubt: Iceland is one of the most fascinating travel destinations in the world.
I am excited and full of anticipation. Not just of the heli-skiing – my first in this region – but also of Eleven Experience’s particular philosophy. It’s owner, Chad Pike, who is Senior Managing Director in London for the renowned investment company Blackstone Group, uses Eleven to live out his passion for nature: his mission is to touch people with extraordinary experiences and provide unforgettable moments; to hear every guest say: that was the best day of my life. One of the American’s Eleven destinations is the Deplar Farm in northern Iceland. The former sheep farm is an exclusive hideaway that has, however, maintained its original character. With its secluded location in the Fljot Valley, it is the ideal starting point for what Eleven Experience represents: getting close to nature and setting extraordinary standards for adventure holidays. My heli-skiing tour has achieved that hands down and totally enthralled me – pure powder snow with a view out to the ocean.
At Deplar Farm, you will find authentic Iceland character combined with the latest design. The property, which has just 13 guest rooms, exudes peace and premium quality. Embedded into the vast countryside, glass window facades in the living room, restaurant and spa create a direct connection with unspoilt nature. All rooms offer warmth and a sense of well-being; the abundant light highlights the selected materials used: local wood, stone, matched with exposed concrete and metal features. The atmosphere is almost familial in view of the reasonable numbers of guests; nevertheless, the lavish breakfast buffet caters for all possible wishes – individual orders are readily accommodated. In the evening we are spoilt with lamb and fish, a real treat with homemade sourdough bread which, at best, would only be improved by serving the meal on preheated plates. In order provide some variety during the daytime, non-skiers are well catered for throughout the year: snowmobile driving, rides on Iceland’s ponies or salmon fishing – in line with the Eleven philosophy – will leave an unforgettable mark. After sport and adventure, there is also the guesthouse’s own inviting spa: the elegant pool area stretches right out into the open air where you can relax or celebrate a successful day at the well-stocked bar. My tip: you really must fly there and experience the amazing powder snow, the shimmering Northern Lights and the unique hospitality.
